Healthy Food Choices Keep Seniors Healthy

The World Health Organization reports that many of the disease that plague seniors are the result of poor diet and nutrition. The good news is that seniors can help to protect themselves by eating more healthy food.

An article on, Elderly Nutrition 101: Ten Foods to Keep You Healthy, outlines what foods need to be included in an elderly nutrition program.

  1. Carbohydrate-rich foods such as sweet potatoes and brown rice
  2. Protein-rich foods like salmon and beans
  3. Five servings each day of fruits and vegetables

It also is important that seniors eat meals which are prepared with the nutrients needed to stave off many of the diseases and conditions that are common among seniors. These nutrients include Omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, fiber, and vitamins and minerals.

Since seniors are prone to dehydration, it is important that they drink plenty of water. As we age, the body’s ability to conserve water decreases so seniors don’t feel thirsty as often. Their need for water does not decrease, however.

There are many issues that keep seniors from eating the amount of healthy food. These include loss of appetite and the side of effects of medication. The need for proper nutrition does not decrease with age, however, and it is important to eat right in order to stay healthy and active.
